How long have you been a student?
-It has been almost half a year (five months)
Why do you choose to be a LexYouth student?
-Because my Mom told me the teachers do it for good reasons, the donation my mom makes will be
donated to charity or community projects
Why do you want to do the LexYouth lesson in addition to a regular chess school?
-It is my New Year’s resolution to get good at chess. The chess school does a lot of games and puzzles LexYouth is more relax and fun.
Who is your teacher? Do you like him, and why?
-Raymond is my teacher, and I heard he was a state Chess champion twice. Yes, I do like him, because he has a sense of humor.
What is the format of the lesson?
-It is on Zoom, and Raymond always comes prepared. He is also able to answer all my questions.
What did you learn from the lesson?
-Every lesson there is a focus, such as games, strategies, or puzzles. I learned knowledge and strategies about chess. I had lots of fun too.
Will you drop it if you get busy? Why?
-No. Because Raymond has a sense of humor and it is fun.
How would you comment on your teacher?
-He has a sense of humor and he is pretty good with chess
What are the best parts of the lesson?
-Sometimes we have breaks, and sometimes I won a game on chess.com.
What could be improved?
-I know it may not be perfect, but I can’t think of anything to be improved now.

-I look forward to our next lesson

Interview with a LexYouth Teacher

(Mathew, 7th grade)

Why do you want to be a LexYouth teacher?
I want to give back to my community, and I feel like that this is a good way. I feel that I have
been gifted so much without giving back. Not only that, but I also get the added bonus of a
reward.
What do you teach? How many hours per week?
I teach Computer Science and Math. I teach around 2 hours a week and spend around half an
hour preparing each week. The preparation is usually spent on making slideshows.
How do you teach?
I try to teach through lectures before moving on to a project that incorporates the knowledge
from the lectures. I try to use examples.
Can I have your sample slides?
Yes.
Who is your student? How old?
My student is Jasper. He is in Kindergarten.
How is your relationship with your student? Do you want to say anything to him?
I think that I am quite friendly with my student. He is very smart, as he is in second grade math
already.
What are the difficulties you have encountered in teaching?
One difficulty was how my student sometimes says he gets stuff but has only memorized the
words. I push him to try and tell me if he doesn’t understand the concept, but I know that it can
be hard to differentiate between memorizing the words that I said and understanding the
concept.
What is the fun part as a LexYouth teacher?
I find that interacting with my student and seeing him do so well in my classes is really fun. I like
seeing him make progress and understanding things that he previously didn’t understand.
What are the challenges you have had as a LexYouth teacher? How have you overcome those?
One challenge as a LexYouth teacher is making sure that I have just the right amount of content
to teach during my lesson. I usually overcome this by making sure my main lesson is
intentionally shortened. I then make a bunch of 1-minute activities, tasks, problems or lessons to do at the end of the class. Because of this, I finish the main lesson around five minutes before
class ends then I start the small activities.
Is there anything you want to tell the LexYouth management team?
I appreciate the hard work that you do to organize this program. I feel like my work is
insignificant compared to theirs.
What do you like about the LexYouth program most? Or What do you enjoy most as a LexYouth
teacher?
As stated above, I find that interacting with my student is fun, as I like seeing him make
progress and understanding things that he previously didn’t understand.
What improvements do you think LexYouth can make going forward?
I don’t really have much knowledge on how the system works, so I don’t have much feedback.
As a teacher, I haven’t really run into much roadblocks or problems because of LexYouth.
